Quilting Studio Reveal

My studio, aka the living room takeover, is complete!

This is the view from just inside the front door. I think it needs a little something, don't you? I'm thinking a long narrow quilted "welcome" wall hanging, hung from the ceiling, perpendicular to the wall so that it shields the design wall from the initial view.

The sunlight shining in from the window is pretty intense! I knew I wanted new window treatments, but I now know I will need at least a sheer over this window for quilting during quiet time. There's a roller shade, but that blocks nearly all that lovely light. My sewing machine table turned out fabulously! Hubby set up a camera mount tonight so I will have to do a little free motion quilting video soon.

Shelving unit full of supplies, thread, batting and other supplies. Way too much stuff! I need to make something, many somethings.Curtains! Patchwork curtains. That's what this room needs. Two for one, stash reduction and pretty window coverings!

A cozy spot for hand work. I haven't sat in this chair much since I stopped nursing my babies and now it beckons me to take a rest. That's our wonderful front porch just outside the window. My house is small but it has a lot of  bits we love.

A shot taken from near the shelving unit towards my cutting and ironing table. Isn't the light in this room fabulous?

I got a little carried away and made a video tour of my studio too. My little guy who was very grubby and in a dirty shirt and his undies adorable tried to steal the show.

Now I will have to not only create beautiful things, but also keep the mess under control since it is the first room you see when coming in the front door! I think it will be quite challenging and uncomfortable, but I'm pushing myself outside my comfort zones lately and seeing a lot of growth from it.

Best part about this room? Other than traffic coming to and from the stairs, it is all mine for quilting!

I will link this with Nina Marie's Off the Wall Friday and Leah Day's Free Motion Friday.

  1. Keep it clean?? Bwaahaaahaaaaa! Oh. Well, maybe you can... It is a great space, super white and cozy at the same time, full of precious light. Love the table your hubby made. Is it slippery because of enamel? The pics of the kids are great too. so pretty and fun. You got it going on girl.

    1. Yep, 3 thick coats of high gloss, urethane fortified enamel. Yep, that clean part might be hard, but at least if a customer or company is coming I could grab the mess and hide it in my bedroom!

    1. Oh, trust me, right now the rest of the house is trashed. I spent today getting more sewing stuff out of our bedroom so I could rearrange that and move some of my hubby’s stuff into the bedroom. We still have to set up the love seat and TV in the back room for the kids! And this evening I had to stop cleaning and organizing so that I could actually quilt on that new table before the hubby felt his work wasn’t appreciated! My house is a small cottage style one, and it’s really a bit too small with three kids (plus homeschool stuff! Egads, the space that takes up!) but we’re making it work. When we’re not moving everything around and IF the clutter has been kept in check, one of the reasons I love my little house is it is easy to keep clean.

  4. The room looks perfect. Your DH did a great job on your sewing table. I especially love that the table is in front of your window, love all the natural light. The appearance of your little one was so cute. Thanks for sharing your new studio.

    1. Thanks! That window is great. I may start parking my car a little farther up the driveway so I don’t see it and make sure to plant some hollyhocks and sunflowers outside the window.

  5. I love having a sewing space right out in the open rather than being tucked away. When I had a room with a door in a back bedroom I felt like I was in a dungeon. The windows and lighting are great too!

    1. I kinda like the getting away of a private space, but as a mom, that sometimes ends badly! The light is fabulous!

  6. I love your new sewing table and room. I had my sewing room in my kitchen island for four years. It got me in the great habit of putting projects and sewing machine away every afternoon before supper preparations could begin. Now I'm in our new sun room and I still like to put projects away. Only difference I can leave my Horizon out overnight because I'm not chopping veggies where I sew!

  7. Lovely space!

I use my "formal" living room space for a sewing room. Like you it is the first thing people see when they walk in the door. Unlike you - I don't care one bit if they walk into the mess. Of course I don't have any clients. Just friends and family and they KNOW, lol! :)

    1. I'd like to think that we creative types can't be too concerned with neatness when we're creating! And you have been seriously creative lately! This space is really all about the clients. Otherwise I'd be happy with my quilty nook in the bedroom!

  9. Wow, the lighting is amazing---and so are your beautiful hardwood floors! Kudos for bravery in making your living room into a studio. It would be hilarious to see the looks on people's faces when they walk in. I would tell all my friends and family to be sure to come to the front door!

    1. Thanks! I was thinking of putting skirts around the two tables so I could hide more stuff under them, but being able to see those floors under the tables sure makes the room look bigger. Trust me, it’s only the kids who come in the back door so I’ll have to keep it spiffy. At least all who enter will know that I take my quilting seriously!

  11. Wonderful room -- my only window in my quilt room faces the east, so limited light. I envy you all that wonderful light! If you bought a hanging rod (the kind used for claw foot tubs), I bet you could make a wonderful curtain to hide your stash. I used an idea like that when we rehabbed one of our previous houses --- a freestanding shower that needed an oddly shaped curtain to separate shower from oversized soaker tub. I bought one of those, adapted it and took some decorator fabric I'd bought at a yard sale of various trees and made my shower curtain to hang from the rod. Used the vinyl liners on the inside of course, but it was lovely.
