Of Ruler Work (on a Bernina), Weddings, and Funk.

Hello dear readers! I seem to have a bad case of Quilter's ADD. I've got so many things vying for my attention, I feel a bit like one of those bouncy balls my kids like to throw around. You know the kind? About one inch in diameter and they bounce about 20 times before rolling under the fridge. The whole time they are bouncing, I wonder if this time it's going to break something. Boing, nope. Boing, nope. Boing, nope. Boing, boing, boing.......roll and disappear.

I'm not going to break nor disappear. But I'm looking at April's more clear calender and am hoping I will stop bouncing so much and finish something. At least I finished my sister's wedding gift.

Darling Di finished something and I thought I'd share it with you. She blogs at Snippets n Scraps and she's done a baby boy's charity quilt using ruler work on her Bernina 1230. She did a lovely job not only on the quilt, but also showing the Janome Ruler Foot components and how they work on her machine with the #75 Bernina Shank Adapter.

I'm still tidying up my sewing room from my trip to Lancaster. Yes, still. Why do I pile stuff on all the horizontal surfaces? Geez Louise! I was a bit frustrated and decided to do just a tiny bit of quilting practice for fun. I felt kinda rusty.

My kids have finished up their school week and next week is spring break for them. Hopefully I can still make some progress on quilting projects, but I plan on doing some fun with them too. There's a short train trip in our future!

I hope you'll indulge me while I share a few pictures from the wedding:

My sister and her groom
My youngest as ring bearer.
Flower girls fighting over the adorable ring bearer. By golly he was going to dance with all the little girls whether he liked it or not! Or at least that's what the girls had planned.
My lovely daughter. No pics of my oldest son for some reason.  As a 10 year old boy, he wasn't too thrilled with all the romance and such.

So next post, I hope to have something with a little more focus. There's the Westalee Ruler Foot review, my silk wholecloth project, and a few other things to work on. Then there's the draw of spring time gardening. I admit being in a bit of a funk. I can't decide what to focus on so nothing gets done. That's got to stop!

When you're in a quilting funk, do you push through the projects and then do something you want to do? Or do you do the thing you want to do first? Hmmm....I sound like a whiner. Well, that's got to stop as well!

  1. I'm a one or two projects at a time kinda gal, so I push things through to sew what I want. Your practice looks so pretty. What do you do with them. If I put the time into something I want it to be useful, but practice is important.

  2. Your fun stitchin' piece has some elements of "what's been going 'round" in the fmq world. The swirls with stylized feathers, pebbles and echoes prove to be quite do-able by most who have some experience. Your stitching is super nice!!!! The wedding looks like it was a wonderful event, except maybe for a certain young man!

  3. I tend to flit from project to project, working on what I like, UNLESS I have a deadline, then I will muster through. Thanks for sharing the cute wedding photos...such a charmer your youngest...no wonder the girls were already fighting over him!

  5. It usually takes jumping into quilting for a few hours to get past my funks, but I usually start with an epic WIP list, and then tackle the tasks closest to completion, because a good finish always makes me crave another one! However, the other thing that usually works is jumping into a new project.... Best of luck, your quilting sample looked great!

  6. What beautiful children you have! Thanks for sharing the pictures. I usually clean when I get in a mood. :) I was procrastinating this week (finishing a quilt) so I started going through cabinets to straighten them out. I found some great stuff! Then I went through my stash and pulled fabrics for a couple new quilts. That started the ideas flowing and... You'll be back in your groove before you know it.

  7. I easily have 40ish on the go with FOUR client quilts. :/ And then got struck with inspiration for one way down the list.

So I pushed thru client work for most of the day and set aside an hour after dinner for fabric play for the inspiration piece. Glad I did.

  8. My answer Amy is 'it just depends on my mood', LOL sometimes I push through and sometimes I push 'it' aside and start something I want! I figure as long as I am doing something it doesn't matter, it will all get done someday, hehe.

  9. Amy your kids are adorable! When I start a project I become obsessed and have to finish. I need to get something new pieced so I can work on my freemotion. That is what I love to do most and it always gets me out of a funk..Val

  11. I know how you're feeling. I've had a quilt laying out to be quilted for more than a week now, and just can't seem to get to it. Mine though is more a lack of motivation. I want to piece blocks. I want to make something else (like "Essential Wristlets," lately). Anything but quilt. So, I guess I'm really doing what my mood demands. Gosh, your warm-up piece is gorgeous! You practice so beautifully! Thanks for the heads-up on Di's post. I have been lax about keeping up with my blog reading. Di is really branching out and making beautiful things these days.

  12. Amy, I am very interested in your couching foot hack. Will you tell us what you did, or, if you have given those details, please let me know where to find them? Thanks!

    1. I did create my own free motion couching foot a while back, using the convertible FMQ foot set. Here's the link: http://www.freemotionquiltingadventures.com/2011/08/free-motion-couching-foot-tutorial.html

Janome also did come out with a couching foot a few years ago which you can read about it and watch a few of my videos on this foot: http://www.freemotionquiltingadventures.com/2013/03/free-motion-couching-review-videos.html

  13. The food and service at this location for vows were spectacular. I was at an amazing event here recently. The event was outdoors along the water and against a beautiful sunset. As the party moved indoors, I was struck by the decor.
