Stitching on the Swirly Bird: Free Motion Quilting Swirls

I'm trying to finish up some small projects and have been free motion quilting around this bird which was appliqued using the Artistic Edge cutter and then machine embroidered on a Janome MC14000.

It was my first attempt to digitize my own MEA design and it wasn't completely successful. Watch the video to see how I dealt with the excessive thickness of the satin stitches by adjusting the foot's height as I went.

Thanks so much for all the positive comments on my quilted window from my last post. I think it was a hit!

  5. Thank you, Amy. I believe just watching the smooth flow of your quilting is re-training my brain. You have given me confidence to get my free motion skills back after not doing any for several years.

  8. Question - Have you quilted on any of the Janome sit down quilting machines? I think they have the hopping foot. Since you said you don't care for a hopping foot, I'm just wondering how you like the SD quilting machines? AND, your quilted Swirly Bird is turning out lovely. I would not have known that the thickness wasn't planned if you had not mentioned it, visually it looks great.

    3. Sharon, the hopping foot on a sit down long arm is a whole 'nother beast! I don't mind them--they don't have the cheapo little bar that hooks over the needle bar like the basic hopping darning/fmq foot on a domestic-- instead the 'hop' is built into movement of the presser foot bar.

I've tried the Janome sitdown machines and they're pretty wonderful. The Artistic 18SD machines are real work horses, but very basic. The newer Artistic 16 is built completely different and it's wonderful, though more costly.

  10. Another great video, Amy! One thing that was really valuable for me was seeing how you use the adjustable foot to go over different thicknesses. I'm eagerly anticipating the release of the new Bernina ruler foot, and it also has adjustable height via a screw, so this was really useful information for me. :)
