My Big Quilty Secret

I've mentioned before that I've been working on developing a class to teach how to use rulers with a stationary machine, whether a domestic sewing machine or a sit down long arm. The class is all ready to go and I'll be offering it locally on a small scale.

Sadly, the summer has been busier than I had planned and I am slowly working on the sampler quilt that will showcase many of the designs in this class. I can't be too disappointed that it's not done as I've been making up some fun time with my kids after finishing up my big project of the summer.

My big secret project? Well, it had me boarding a plane for the first time in 18 years, so this could happen:

If you've taken advantage of the fabulous learning platform that is Craftsy, this scene is familiar to you. That's right, I'm releasing a ruler work class on Craftsy and it should be available towards the end of this month!

Squeeeeeeee! You can't imagine how hard it has been to not announce it here as soon as it was a certainty! Especially as so many readers had commented that they wished I would do a class with Craftsy.

The exact release date isn't established yet, but my filming is all done. Craftsy is doing their post production work making sure you get a high-quality class. (Kindly put, among other things, they're cutting out all the bits where I got flustered and messed up!)

I'm looking forward to telling you more about the experience and the class. In the meantime, I've got some great posts lined up and I'll be showing more of my ruler work sampler. I'm hoping to post pictures of it when finished on the "projects" forum of my class alongside pics that I hope my students will post also.

    1. Great question, thanks for asking. In the class there are a couple of exercises for a straight ruler and a curved ruler and it's not too specific on the size of curve as long as it's something that is a gentle curve and 6-8 inches long. The starter ruler that comes with the Westalee foot is perfect as are any straight rulers over 6 inches and a basic curve of about that same length. There is one lesson in which I am demonstrating using more complex rulers, but they aren't needed for the class and there's another lesson in which a variety of curves are used, but it's more of a reference lesson, not a project to follow along with. I tried to balance exercises with basic rulers against showing how you can use many different rulers, without requiring more students to buy a bunch of rulers

    1. Thanks for asking Nancy. I had taken a picture of the ruler along with another ruler of theirs that was cut correctly and had forgotten to send them an email in all the busyness of what you now know is Craftsy class creation. I emailed them yesterday and they got right back to me in a hurry to say it was cut wrong and that they'd send me a replacement asap. They also said they had gone through a box of rulers and found a few more and were addressing the quality issue with the people who cut and distribute their rulers. I got the feeling that they were horrified to have such a quality issue and were serious about fixing it. So if you have a messed up ruler send them an email about it.

  16. WooHoo!!! So glad to hear this news, and I know you must be so so excited. I have not wanted to try ruler work because I want to get FMQ down first. But with a class on Craftsy, I will be surely checking it out. I also am a Craftsy hog - over 100 classes. With only about 5 years to retirement, I am preparing myself to be able to do a lot of wonderful things. Thanks much for your wonderful blog and for the upcoming class.

  27. Congrats. Amy!!! Yes this is so exciting! I have watched everything I can off of youtube but to have a class, will be the cats meow!! I too left a message at Craftsy to check your blog and tutes and asked for a class. I am really liking the Westalee rulers. And go back and forth between the Westalee foot and Janome foot. Haven't used them a ton yet as I am just getting started with ruler work. I have a Babylock Crescendo. All your work has paid off. Thank you so much. I will be signing up for sure.
